8 More Savory Topping Ideas For Your Oatmeal
Hamburger
Tasty hamburger flavors can be enjoyed without the bun! Cook ground beef, spoon it on top of your oatmeal, and add your favorite assortment of hamburger toppings. The fiber-rich oatmeal keeps you feeling full for hours, while savory hamburger “copycat” flavors keep oatmeal feel really indulgent!
A few additional hamburger topping ideas are shredded lettuce, onion, pickles, shredded cheese, or tomatoes!
Smoked sausage and veggies
Another way to add smoky flavor to oatmeal is by topping it with smoked sausage! Smoked sausage has been cured with the use of aromatic wood, which is burned to produce smoke. The smoke gives the sausage a distinctive flavor and extends its storage life.
Lightly cooking smoked sausage with complementary vegetables can give your oatmeal a unique, savory flavor. These veggies could be roasted kale, bell pepper, or jalapeno pepper.
Crushed pretzels
Fewer things are more satisfying than a salty, crunchy pretzel. When it comes to adding savory flavors to your oatmeal, why not crunch up pretzels and add them on top? Better yet, add a sprinkle of shredded cheese to build your own ballpark pretzel + oatmeal … but much healthier and more satiating!
There are even grain-free pretzels available for those looking to avoid gluten.
Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds are good sources of protein, healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Nuts and seeds regulate body weight because their fats are not fully absorbed. They also regulate food intake and help burn energy.
Add nutty crunch and flavor to your oatmeal by sprinkling a nut or seed on top! If you don’t want to bother with buying nuts or seeds separately, Proper Good oatmeal blends include nuts or seeds to stir in!
A couple of our favorites are:
- Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal (pumpkin seeds … yum!)
- Caramel Pecan Oatmeal (pecans)
Breakfast bowl
Oatmeal is a filling breakfast all on its own, but what if you’re craving other breakfast foods, too? Why, you can just spoon them on top of your oatmeal of course! Problem solved. ;)
Try making scrambled eggs and bacon and placing on top of your oatmeal for an all-in-one breakfast meal! Hot sauce or everything but the bagel seasoning can add tasty flavor as well.
Portobello mushrooms
For those who are vegetarian or vegan, meat substitutes are key to a savory meal. If you don’t eat ground beef, bacon, or smoked sausage, portobello mushrooms are an awesome solution. Portobello mushrooms have a texture and flavor that fits in nicely with a variety of dishes. They can also be marinated and grilled without falling apart (which can sometimes be tricky with tofu).
If you’re looking to top your oatmeal with portobello mushrooms, try marinating first before cooking. This easy marinade combines balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, garlic powder, black pepper, cayenne and rosemary for ultimate deliciousness! The mushrooms only need 10 minutes to absorb the flavor, then pop them on the grill for 3-4 minutes per side.
Guacamole
No need to go to a restaurant for fresh guacamole! With the right ingredients, you can easily make guacamole at home. And to achieve extra creamy texture, guacamole can be added on top of your oatmeal!
Guacamole consists of avocados, onion, garlic, cilantro, lime, tomatoes and salt. Easy peasy!
Chili
A few spoonfuls of chili is just the trick to add heartiness and savoriness to your oatmeal! Proper Good southwest chili includes plant-based ingredients, such as meatless crumbles, beans, poblanos, and corn. This chili blend includes 19 grams of pea protein and zero grams of sugar, making it the ideal savory topping for your oatmeal!
If you’d like a little extra crunch, try topping with crushed tortilla chips!
So many oatmeal toppings, so little time! We hope that you’ll come back to this list again and again, every time you’re in the mood for something a little savory to go on top of your oatmeal.
