Chilled, refreshing, packed with goodness and simply delicious! Overnight oats have it all!
BUT… overnight oats usually take ages to prep!
Sure oats are quick to grab but to make overnight oats truly oatstanding you need to add fruits, berries, nuts and other tasty and nutritious ingredients… and then you start asking yourself… How much should I add of each ingredient? How big should I cut the fruit? How much of this should be oats? Should I add some nuts too?
Then you ask yourself, shouldn’t it actually be called overnight “fruity berry nuts & oats”?!? What is going on here?
Well, with Proper Good Overnight Oats it’s quick & easy!
We have taken out all the guesswork! We have spent the time measuring, chopping, and trying different amounts of each ingredient to land on what we think is the perfect mix of oats, fruits, berries and nuts, making one seriously tasty, healthy and filling breakfast!
All you have to do is…
- Open your Overnight Oats and pour them into a container.
- Add your choice of milk (don’t worry, we will get to the milk choices 😊)

What Liquid to Use with Overnight Oats
Overnight Oats can be made with almost any liquid, milks are certainly the most popular as they add a touch of creaminess to the oats, we personally love the extra creaminess!
Choose any milk you like, such as dairy milk, nut milk or oat milk.
We have also tried a few options that are a bit more far oat but we think they taste fantastic, maybe try…
Cold Brew - we love having our overnight oats with a milk/cold brew split 50/50… if you need a bit of a wake up this is a fantastic option. Personally we think this combo is best with our Choc, Peanut Butter & Banana Overnight Oats!
Tea - ok… hear us out… similarly to cold brew adding a bit of tea can give a little caffeine hit to your overnight oats and a whole new layer of flavor. We tried Creme De Earl Grey tea 50/50 with oat milk in our Blueberry Coconut & Maple Overnight Oats and it was oat of this world (have we maxed out the oat puns yet?!?)
Flavored Milk - there was a period in our lives when we forgot about flavored milk, enjoyed it hugely as children and then nothing for decades… well, we recently rediscovered it and in our opinion flavored milk is on another level :-) And, now you can get flavored milks not only in dairy milk, but in oat and nuts milks too!
We have tried both Chocolate Milk and Banana Milk with our Choc, Peanut Butter & Banana Overnight Oats and they are both incredible! Could always do a 50/50 cold brew/flavored milk mix and go all oat! We also tried vanilla milk with our Apple Cinnamon & Walnut overnight oats and woohoo! That is another seriously tasty combo!
How Much Liquid to Use with your Overnight Oats?
We recommend that you pour your overnight oats mix into your container, shake it slightly so that all the ingredients are level and then pour your milk in to just above the ingredients.
This ensures that there is enough milk to soak all the ingredients, however, if your personal taste is to have them slightly more liquidy then you can just add a bit more liquid. Try a few slightly different amounts to land on your perfect oats!
There are easy ‘how to prep’ instructions on the inside label of Proper Good Overnight Oats, so you will be all set once you have your Proper Good Overnight Oats in hand :-)
Overnight Oats at Anytime of Day
We are not 100% keen on the name overnight oats, we get it, it makes sense… BUT it implies two things… one that your oats have to soak overnight, and secondly that this is only a breakfast meal… in our opinion, wrong on both counts!
You don’t need a full 8 hours for your oats to soak overnight, the oats will be soft and ready to eat when soaked for anything over 3 hours, and if you want to get crazy, like absolutely lose it, you can soak them during the day! Oats don’t know what time it is!
Secondly, Overnight Oats are not just a breakfast meal, they can be enjoyed any time of day, we personally LOVE having oats after a workout, for lunch or for dinner if we just want something light and refreshing, especially in hot weather. And… if you fancy getting a little more creative with your overnight oats you can add some cheeky bits of sweetness to make the ultimate dessert…
Overnight Oats for Dessert!
You know how sometimes you want a sweet treat but don’t want to go all out with a piece of cake… ok who are we kidding, of course we want cake, but there’s not much nutritious value in cake, so with overnight oats for dessert you get that dose of sweetness that you’re craving but you’re eating a relatively healthy dessert! A win/win!
For an overnight oats dessert, first think layering… then think toppings! Layer your overnight oats with extra sweetness, here are a few options we love…
Extra fruit and berries - like strawberries, mango, banana and raspberries - whatever you fancy!
Add in lots of extra nuts - like pecans, almonds or macadamia nuts!
Add in some decadence with whipping cream… from straight whipped cream to cream with lemon zest (we love this with the Blueberry Overnight Oats), to Maple Whipped Cream, this seems to work with all the overnight oats! It is just SO GOOD!
Top with chocolate shavings, caramel sauce or even sprinkles to make a truly decadent overnight oats dessert!
For the parents out there, this is a great way to get kids excited about dessert without insane amounts of sugar! The layering can make it look like there is a lot of the ‘dessert side’ when in fact it is a lot of the ‘oats side’ to keep fiber high and dare we say it… give your kids a healthyish dessert!
We hope this answers any of your overnight oats questions, and we hope you give them a delicious try :-)
