Biscuits and gravy facts
Did you know that February 21st AND December 2nd are both considered National Biscuits and Gravy Day in the U.S.? That’s some serious biscuits and gravy love! ;)
But what is this beloved breakfast anyway? Let’s find out!
What are biscuits and gravy?
Biscuits and gravy are a popular dish throughout the U.S., and particularly in Southern parts of the country. Although the word “biscuit” often refers to twice-baked bread, the American version of a biscuit is more like a scone.
Biscuits and gravy became a go-to meal after the American Revolutionary War, during which stocks of foodstuffs were in short supply. This simple, straightforward dish became a household staple.
Biscuits and gravy is made up of soft dough biscuits that are covered in sawmill or sausage gravy. The gravy consists of drippings of cooked pork sausage, white flour, milk, and bits of sausage meat! Add in a little black pepper and you’ve got yourself some gravy.
Calories and nutritional information
Typically, there are 300-500 calories in 1 biscuit with gravy. Biscuits and gravy are relatively high in sodium, with one serving equating 40 percent of the recommended daily sodium intake. In addition, total fats equal 21 grams, or 32 percent of the daily intake.
Ways to make biscuits and gravy healthy
While traditional biscuits and gravy feel a bit indulgent, simple swaps can be made to healthify this meal! Here are a few tips for making biscuits and gravy healthy.
Use a keto flour
On keto, regular wheat flour and most wheat flour alternatives are not allowed due to their high carb content. However, there are many keto-friendly flour options that are similar in taste and texture to wheat-based flour! Almond flour is a popular keto flour substitute because of its low carb count, and it can be used as a 1-to-1 substitute for wheat flour. Almond flour is perfect for breading fried, air-fried, or baked foods in addition to baked goods!
Coconut flour, chia flour, flaxseed meal, and oat fiber are all suitable alternatives to wheat flour.
Opt for non-dairy milk alternative
While our keto biscuits and gravy recipe calls for heavy cream, this can easily be swapped out for a non-dairy alternative! Most heavy creams are 2 parts liquid to 1 part fat. Most nuts, like almonds, are filled with healthy fats, but nut milks are too thin to replace heavy creamer.
Silk’s Dairy-Free Heavy Whipping Cream is a great alternative to traditional heavy cream. There are zero grams of sugar, and it’s keto-friendly! Another option is Ripple Half & Half, which is plant-based and includes no saturated fat or cholesterol.
Swap butter for ghee
While butter is approved for keto, if you’re looking for an alternative, ghee is an option! Ghee is a form of clarified butter where the milk solids and water have been removed, which makes it more concentrated in fat. Ghee has a little more fat than butter and provides a bit more butyric acid. Plus, other fatty acids! With only a small trace of carbs, ghee is keto-friendly while also being a rich source of vitamins A and E.
Ghee can also help reduce inflammation, soothe and heal skin, and aid in weight loss.
Use low fat sausage
Opting for a lower fat sausage is an easy way to make your biscuits and gravy recipe healthy! When you’re choosing sausage, check the nutrition facts and ingredients list! Sometimes, sausage products that appear healthy actually contain more fat and calories than traditional pork sausage.
One of our favorite brands is Thin ‘n Trim, which makes low sodium, low fat sausage perfect for all kinds of recipes. Applegate Farms also has several breakfast sausages, including flavorful options like apple, maple, and sage.
Add in a side!
If you’re craving an additional dish to your keto biscuits and gravy, we say … why not?! While not keto, oatmeal can be an excellent side dish to biscuits and gravy. So if you’re not on a strict keto diet, it’s worth a try! Biscuits and gravy are savory, while some oatmeal blends are sweet, making for an awesome combo.
Try Mint Choc Chip, Apple Cinnamon, or Blueberry Coconut blends for a sweet, but healthy, burst of flavors!
